Different way to say "thanks"

Some things that were not mentioned during the going back and forth for my brother's surgery and time following was that we noticed his different ways to say "thanks."
He knew my mom would not be allowed to visit him right after his first surgery, and then our dad told him I was going to bring her down to the hospital.
as we were leaving his room that night, after I fixed up his food tray for things that might interest him, I was just about out the door, and he called to me. I turned around.. and he gave me the shooting gun finger. As I joke, I said to him. I guess I am lucky it was not any other finger. At which we both chuckled.
We drove my brother from the hospital to his apartment, we stayed for his home health nurse visit and after we took him to get his meds... we decided to talk to him about HIS plans for the following week. Turns out he was on board with some of the things we were thinking of.
After we felt all things were as settled as they could be, we told him he didnt' need us sitting there looking at him, so we were going to go.He stood up, and gave our sis and I one big strong hug and did say he appreciated our help.
OUr dad always said thanks throughout this whole thing..... our mom... nothing unless coached.
Today, I will touch base with my brother, see if he wants me to bring anything later, after he is out of ICU.... or look information up for him. (he does not have a computer)
Although, our lives have sent us in different directions,, you can tell we are family.
